Vol: 2: An Old Friend Returns
I woke to a circle of faces surrounding me, looking blurry and strange in my disoriented state. At first I jumped, wanting to get away from them, but then I realized it was just my family. “Lilly, are you okay?” my mother asked, reaching to help pull me to my feet.
To tell the truth, I wasn’t really sure if I was okay or not, but I was confident lying on the floor was not going to make me feel any better. A light throbbing pounded in the back of my head, letting me know that I had hit it on the way down. Well, that sucked. Blinking a few times, I worked on getting myself pulled together before I tried to answer the barrage of questions being flung at me. “Okay, okay, give me a minute. I’m not really sure what happened.”
RJ pulled a chair out so I could sit down. When I was settled, I reached for my soda. After couple of gulps, the fuzziness started to clear. All those old memories had come back to me, memories from a life before I had been born. The dreams had been bits and pieces, but now it felt like I had a curtain inside my mind pushed to the side to reveal the outside the world.
I reached up and took hold of the necklace RJ had given me, and looked at it with new eyes. Knowing eyes. Energy burst through me, and I could feel the power of it flash through my eyes. Frantic exclamations sped from the lips of my family. Apparently, what I'd felt had been visible to them.
“What the hell is going on?” RJ asked as he moved over to sit in front of me. “Lilly, your eyes…they are…on fire.” His hand cautiously moved toward my face, stroking my cheek lightly as he stared deeply into my eyes.
Memories of my past swirled with the current state of my situation. I breathed out, trying to compose myself. The moment I remembered my sword of old, The Opiment sword, the weapon of my people, the necklace began to surge with power.
A pounding came to the front door, hard and powerful, desperate sounding. My father rushed to see who it was. I watched in amazement as the necklace lifted from my chest and began to spark and shake with the energy inside.
“I’m sorry, ma’am. I don’t know who you are,” my father said from the front of the house.
“Please, I must see her. I must talk to the princess,” a familiar voice replied. Memories of my old nanny Amber flashed through my mind, and I rushed to see her.
“Princess! It really is you!” she exclaimed from the other side of the door. In all this time, nothing had changed with my old friend. Her warm brown eyes shone with concern and worry, but also happiness at finding me. She had swept her dark hair up into a ponytail and wore a simple t-shirt and jeans. Her pale skin had accents of pinks and peaches, giving her face a glow that looked like makeup but was really all natural. Out of everyone from my former life, Amber had always been the closest person to me, and fiercely protective.
I rushed over to her, longing to wrap my arms around her. I breathed in the sweet scent of strawberries and vanilla, the scent I had once associated with home. However, it seemed at odds with my Earth mother’s jasmine smell. I almost felt torn between the two sides of myself.
“I have no idea how I am going to explain any of this," I said at last. "I swear, I have been trying to tell people for a long time, but no one believed me. Guys, this is Amber. She was my nanny when I lived in the Underworld.” I blushed as I spoke of my once fantasy as my true reality.
“Oh my word, my daughter has gone crazy. I knew it would happen one day.” My mother shook her head. “Miss, I am so sorry for this. She has been spinning tales of the Underworld since she was a little girl.”
“They aren’t tales. She is from the Underworld. So am I,” Amber tried to explain. She reached out to my mother and placed a finger against her temple. Energy pulsed and my mother’s eyes grew wide.
“What happened? What is going on?” my mother gasped with worry and fear.
“Your daughter is a princess. We sent her here for her own protection, but it is time for her to learn the truth of her life and come to save her people,” Amber explained.
That didn’t seem to sit well with my mother. Her eyes turned angry and cold, and she shook her head, pulling me away. “My daughter is not going anywhere, especially not with you. I don’t even know you.”
“Mom…” Things were still going weird. Energy surged within me, and suddenly my skin changed to a deep red color. I felt as if I had a fever, but I didn’t feel sick. Instead, the heat felt like a protection around me. Then, without any control, I began to float.
“I promise you, I don’t want to hurt the princess. Please, my name is Amber, and I am here to help. Now that her powers have manifested, you are all in grave danger.”
